You say lorazepam should be given for weeks. I can tell you that being lazt a benzo saved me from a life of misery, possible hospitalization and losing my job because I absolutely was no longer able to function on my own and needed help. Will his body crave more as time goes on? If side effects such as weakness and nausea occur they may need medical attention. I did not need it for anything else, which i still have sleep problems. Excellent medicine, I take it only as needed but beware, for me at least, massive and rapid weight gain has occurred on it, I was a consistent 130 pounds for the last 3 years, within a month of starting it I've gained 25 pounds. Which for me is great, I needed the weight gain, for others though, take caution in this. For me this drug has been phenomenal and I can take it once and feel good for days.
I have used ativan oral for anxiety, to get me to sleep, and sometimes for nausea. I try to keep a little on hand at all times. I was given some during my chemotherapy treatments. That was the only time I experienced a side effect but I did not realize it immediately. That is, although I acted perfectly normal, when I woke up the next day, I could not remember anything that occurred after the treatment started! I found out about it in a funny way. Before a treatment, I went in to a store with the friend who brought me. We agreed to return after the treatment. Apparently we did and I considered making a significant purchase. My friend convinced me to think it over until the next day. She then called to see if I decided to buy the ring. I had no recollection of the second visit nor my possible purchase. I did several tests after that with the same results - no recollection of anything I did or said for the rest of the day after a chemo treatment. A nurse advised that it was the ativan.
ALL my anxiety, stress, were gone. I also have Tourette's Syndrome, which is a neurological disorder which causes me to have involentary movements and sounds that I have no controll over, (tics.) And once I started taking this medicine, the tics were such at the minimum, i used to have 50-100 tics a day, now i have 3-4 tics all because of Lorazepam. This might be a very good treatment for others with Tourette's Syndrome!!
I have been taking lorazapam for nearly 20 years now. Severe panic attacks and agoraphobia. This is the only medication that has worked and not caused me to feel "addicted" I started with xanax, which made me anxious if I didnt take it at a specific time, and kind of bitchy too. Did the klonapin thing, too groggy. Ativan works just right. I started out with 2mg 3x a day, and am now down to 1mg 2 or 3x a day, if I'm just chillin at home, just 1mg is effective of keeping "el diablo" (panic attacks) away. I feel that the abuse of this drug would only be by someone that doesnt have panic attacks. For me having such a high anxiety level, this drug simply takes the edge off and actually allows me to function as a "normal" person. I can go out to dinner, shopping, to a concert, on a vacation. Not stuck in my house, or an ER anymore. YAY FOR ATIVAN!!!!
