When babies are first born, they are so fragile. They require constant attention and care during their first year of life. Sleep is vital for their development. Sixteen hours a day is an average sleep of a newborn baby. Between day and night, the amount they get is dispersed. Most babies wake throughout the night to feed until they are around eight months old. When babies are breast fed, they likely wake. They may have trouble sleeping for many easily resolved reasons including hunger, dirty diaper, sickness, pain, and frustration.
Babies can also suffer from a sleep disorder, though it may be hard to believe. Babies suffer in diffirent range. Parasomnias, obstructive sleep apnea, and SIDS are the most common disorders found among babies. Night terrors and sleep walking are parasomnias. In babies less than eighteen months they are not found. When they do occur, their sleep pattern is disrupted and they do not get the sleep they need.
Symptoms for babies and older children on obstructive sleep apnea are quite different. Babies will continuously snore when sleep and breathe through their mouth. Their air passage can become completely blocked causing them to stop breathing. A very dangerous condition that can be deadly if not treated. This disorder is usually caused by an enlarged tonsil.
One of the deadliest disorders would be the SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. When a baby has SIDS, the baby stops breathing while asleep. They have to be encouraged to resume breathing. It is not something that they do on their own.The overall cause has not been determined though genetic and environmental elements have been linked to this condition. Babies are set up with monitoring systems if they are at risk. If the babies have stopped breathing, the parents are alerted by the system. There are ways to reduce the chances of SIDS from developing in an infant. First, a baby should always sleep on their back and have a firm mattress. When babies are in a sound sleep, there should be no comforters or stuffed animals left in the bed. A baby sleep system can be used in order to prevent them in turning while sleeping.
The best way to determine if your little one is having sleep issues from a sleep disorder is to be aware of their sleep patterns. If you notice any changing in their sleeping habits, all concerns need to be discussed with their pediatrician. When babies are not getting a sufficient amount of sleep, they develop these disorders. A pediatrician can evaluate any changes and determine if your child is suffering from one of these baby sleep disorders.
