I have taken this med for several years for anxiety, insomnia, and nausea. I find ativan to be quick acting, long lasting, and an all around good drug.....for me. Everyone reacts differantly to the same drug. Be careful taking any medication and if you find it no longer works don't increase the dose on your own...call your doc right away.
Lorazepam (ativan) is a pretty mild benzodiazepine. For me, it didn't do too much at all. It's also one of the more addictive ones, so I don't really recommend it. I think clonazepam (klonopin) is much better and has helped tremendously. No side effects were noticed though. Can be helpful for others, just didn't do the trick for me.
Had a panic attack last year, within days I was in a paranoid state and hubby found a doc for me. When I had that panic attack I remembered feeling the exact same TERROR, when I was a young child, maybe 5 or 6. I've been coping w/it my whole life; not a good test taker, always shy and to myself, then later in life did the drinking and other stuff to get me numb... it just wasn't working. My doc prescribed Ativan (.5mg up to 4x a day) right away, along with Zoloft. It's been one year, and although I do have mini attacks now and again, I am in control - I take .5mg and within minutes I am better. I have never actually taken the full 2mg a day. This drug has saved my life... my relationships, my job... and I now enjoy life like I know I should.
I have had anxiety issues for years but they have worsened considerably lately. I had an anxiety attack so bad a week ago that i went to the e.r and was prescribed a low dose ativan until could see my regular doctor. The medicine helped me so much that i cant begin to describe it. I wasnt able to get in to see my regular pain doctor for the next week or so, and when i did he did not want to prescribe it to me, even after i described how it had opened my eyes and made me realize that i wanted to to stop taking my regular pain meds (methadone, norco)just so that i could have something to make me enjoy life again. My doctor of course says that he "hates that medicine" and it took everything to convince him to at least give me something else for anxity. So instead he prescribed me very small doses of klonopins. At first it sounded to me as if they would be similar but to my dissapointment they are not. Ativans changed the way i was thinking and made me feel very positive about life. I am now in the process of trying to get my doctor changed so that i may have the option of changing the med. My advise to anyone out there is to be on top of your case, and dont just let your doctor take advantage of the fact that you dont know as nuch about med. as they do. I'm a 66 year old Viet-Nam Vet with PTSD. It has hit me harder in the last five years being unable to sleep. I would go 4 to 5 days with no sleep at all and when I did dose off for 30 minutes or so the nightmares were terrible. The V.A. finally put me on 2mg of Lorazepam at night and 1mg during the day. I can sleep now and the nightmares are few. Don't drink booze it will defeat the purpose. It also reduced my panic attacks
