NOT the Military Version, photo is misleading…, December 7, 2011

I have both the military version, (Gerber 22-80027 Ultra M), and the non-military version
(Gerber 22-80012). The M stands for military version. It has a “covered” LED. The non-military
version the LED is exposed. The photo shows the military version, and the item number lists
it as such. But they ship the non-military version. This is probably an oversight as I usually have
good experiences with Amazon. If you click and order this you will probably actually get this:

    […]

There are significant differences between the two lights. Mainly brightness and durability. The
regular version is pretty tough, and it’s a fair amount brighter. I don’t know what they are listed
as but I can tell you from experience, switching batteries, etc. the regular version is brighter and
has a wider, more usable beam. If you wanted a light for say a keychain, the regular is probably a
better choice. It is somewhat dim compared to other flashlights this size, but is fairly rugged and
gives off a decent amount of light. The LED is exposed, could possibly break, though unlikely.

The military version is not quite as bright, and is also a narrower beam, less overall usable light.
It IS however, one of the most rugged, durable lights in existance. Even if it does give off a fairly
limited amount of light. The military one would be a good choice if you were mainly going to use it
in a fairly restricted, small area. Reading maps, finding something in the car, and your main concern
is the RUGGEDNESS, and RELIABILITY, of a light.

For a keychain light the regular version is probably better, to say walk from the car to the house.
For a tank of a light, that is for more specialized tight spaces, that do not require a “floody” light, or even a bright light, the military version would fit the bill. The military version is also
usually at least twice the price as the regular. And a fair amount dimmer.

Great little flashlight. Durable and bright on one triple A battery. Highly recommended as a travel light. I keep mine in my car and it’s nice to have around a spare light. Have not yet changed the battery’s and have been using it for months.
