When I lived in dormitory in university, a roommate always talked during sleep. Sometimes what she had spoken is very clearly. Maybe the members of your family or your sleep partner are also talking in sleep. If you tell them what happen at night, they will say they don’t know.

This phenomenon is sleep talking, people also called it somniloquy. Please don’t ignore it, it belongs to sleep disorder. It’s a type of parasomnia-an abnormal behavior that takes place during sleep. It can be defined the utterance of speech or sounds during sleep without awareness of the event. Sleep talking can involve complicated dialogues or monologues, complete gibberish or mumbling.

Sleep-talkers are not typically aware of their behaviors or speech; therefore their voices and the type of language they use may sound different from their wakeful speech. So even though you can hear sounds clearly of sleep talker, you still don’t know the words they say.

Maybe you are doubt why people speak when they have a deep sleep, let me tell you.

Actually, there are many various causes can lead to sleep talking. Certain medications, emotional stress, depression, fever, alcohol and someone who has poor sleep are more likely to become a sleep talker. Sleep talking often occurs concurrently with other sleep disorders such as sleep terrors, confessional arousals, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, and REM sleep behavior disorder. In rare cases, adult-onset frequent sleep-talking is associated with a psychiatric disorder or nocturnal seizures.

Sometimes, what you speak is nonsensical or related to events that are occurring in your life. You may also talk about past events, old relationships or other topics that have no current bearing on your life.
